sunroof motor repair advice needed

The sunroof motor on my 88 80Q failed on me a couple of days ago.  After
checking the owner's manual, I was able to manually close it.  I took a closer
look at the situation today and found that the motor will work at both ends of
travel but not over the middle portion.  I believe that what happened is that
the high speed motor windings failed, but that the low speed windings continue
to function (low speed at both ends of travel and high speed for middle
portion).  Looking at Bentley, replacing the motor appears to be a significant
task, not to mention the cost.  I'd appreciate any experiences concerning
replacing the motor.  My real question though is advice concerning the
possibility of redirecting the high speed signal to the low speed windings so
that (hopefully) the sunroof will operate over its full range at slow speed.
Any thoughts?  I really don't see what I have to lose.
