Coolant temp sensor location?

1988 Audi 90, NA motor, intermittent temp gauge function.  Works most of the
time, but on occasion, while driving, it just drops to ' key off' position.

I recall this was mentioned on the list as a common problem.  The Bentley
indicates 2 sensors that it labels "temp sensor", both near a coolant
coupling on the head, and both strait across from one another on the above
mentioned coupling (one on top, one on the bottom).

I guess I could simply unplug them one at a time and see if the temp gauge
is affected, but since it only works intermittently regardless - I wouldn't
know if it was the connector, or just the usual failure...

Suggestions???
