Transmission Problems with a V8 quattro

Hello,

I have a  problem/question that I was looking for insight on.  I was driving
my '90 V8 quattro when the rpm shot to 7000 and the car slowed down.  The
transmission appears to be slipping but not sure.  Any thoughts???   I had
to get it towed.  My mechanic is not sure if it is a pump or some converter
inside the transmission.  Any thoughts as to my problem and the best way to
fix the issue.  The car has 122K and prior to this situation never showed
signs of a slipping transmission.
