That is the inherent danger some people never see, even after
it's too late. Having lived in a Military Dictatorship or two, I
share your point of view. If you ever see interviews with
Noam Chomsky (language guy at MIT) when he discusses his views
on the erosion of freedom, it's worth the time. He once commented
on the difference of waiting for a pedestrian light to change at a
deserted intersection in East Germany, either for his own safety,
or waiting for said light because 2 Stasi officials ordered him
to wait for said light. I may not agree with him most of the
time, but he's very thought provoking.
As an old Tagline said, "Life is a sexually transmitted disease
with 100% mortality rate."
