John's right, most people have a problem with this (understandably
so).  I understand the issues he raises.  At the same time, some
guys like one of the mechanics I use tell me to get the parts
myself, since "you can get them way cheaper than even I can".

There's a delicate tradeoff between saving $20 on a part and
shooting yourself in the foot.  When the stakes are much higher
though, you might be able to reach a compromise with your mechanic.
