Waste Gate diaphragm replacement update
Hi people,
Took my waste gate apart this weekend and confirmed my suspicions....my wg
diaphragm was split and very brittle. I didn't want to wait for mail order or
pay $120+ for a new one so I tried one from an '84 5kt junkyard car. I didn't
think it would work because it's shape is much different than the '86 diaphragm.
Also, it has 2 pieces of material stacked on top of each other where my old one
is a single piece. It was in great shape though...not brittle at all so I tried
it. Seems to work fine.... Back to controlled boost levels.
I didn't have too much trouble taking the assembly apart. I followed Scott Mo's
procedure using a jammed screwdriver into the aluminum plate. (thanks Scott!) I
found that I had to add a little heat to burn off the Loctite red from the
threads, then lift the gate as far as it would go to keep it from spinning while
I removed the nut. Otherwise, the loosened nut would just jam against the
Loctite and spin the whole gate.
Thanks to everyone who offered assistance. As always, greatly appreciated.
