If it sounds more like a tapping, it's one of two things usually:
1) Valve lifters, the archille's heel of the I-5. Learn to live with it.
Or, you can get your engine flushed with a nifty device like I just had
done. Solves the problem, though time will tell for how long.
2) Broken exhaust manifold stud. Pretty much a trademark. The manifold
gets hot, swells, breaks the stud off in the head and leaks just a
little, causing what I typically refer to as 'small block chevy header
leak'. Major, major PITA to fix, and not recommended for amateurs.
Again, something that can be lived with.
