Re: 89 100 tranny problems

ok, you've done due diligence...

Here's a probable cause for your problem....

A while back Audi issued a recall on all fwd 5000/100/200 series vehicles.

The reason being because there is non-synthetic oil in the front differential
and this oil had a habit of evaporating over time....

As it evaporated it left the seal between the trans and diff dry. This of
course is not good :-)

As it dried the diff oil started to leak into the tranny.

Very bad.

Audi's fix is to put synthetic oil in the diff, apparently the synthetic doesn't
damage the tranny when it leaks in. No they don't rip everything apart and replace
the seal. That would have been nice, but very expensive to do....

Usually reverse and 3rd gear start having trouble first, the trouble being that they
don't engage smoothly, then it starts taking reverse a few seconds to engage, then
longer... I have a friend with an 88 5000s Avant that takes 10-15 seconds cold
for reverse to engage, third gear engages only if you let off when it's about time
for third to engage. At about 80k the fluid was changed to synthetic, but the
damage had already been done. At well over 200k miles his tranny isn't any worse
than when they put in the synthetic. Remember to check that diff level every
20k miles or so.

If you brought it to the dealer and they never performed the recall, then
perhaps you have a case against them for a new tranny :-)

But I wouldn't hold your breath.

Good Luck,
