Idle Adjustment Screw & Dipstick Q's

We have 2 5KTQWs and today was my "spring cleaning" day for the cars.
One thing which had been off on both was the idle speed. So I took out
my trusty screwdriver and had at it (the air bypass screw that is).

I got the idle back into the normal range, but one thing I noticed on
both cars was that the screw seemed almost loose, like there was no
spring or rubber gromet that held it in adjustment. (One of them was
probably only 1/2 turn from being out of the treaded travel) We live on
dirt roads, which can be bumpy, so I was not surprised that these screw
came out of adjustment, just that they seem like there is little to hold
them to any adjustment.

Does anyone know what (if any) mechanism is suppose to hold these idle
screws?

On another note, the 87 wagon has a red plastic topped oil dip stick.
It seems rather a loose fit in the tube; loose enough that I am
concerned that air may be leaking in here. Does anyone know if this
style dip stick is suppose to have an o-ring or two at the top to seal
it (the plastic has some grooves that look like thay may serve that
purpose)?

TIA
