As far as I recall, this has something to do with the fact that these are
blue and green cells in your eyes that are mainly used for night vision. I
used to be into amateur astronomy and I know that if you want to use a sky
map while watching the sky at night, you need to have a red flashlight so
you can read the map without impairing your night vision.
Having red headlights would probably be good for your night vision, but at
the same time would make the world appear monochromatic, which would not be
safe. Hovewer, that's why the "selective yellow" bulbs are supposed to be
easier on the eye than white ones.
