exactly right. the fingers are just a little ring of spring levers that
release the pressure plate.

that'd be a good guess (hopefully it's not a tranny bearing instead).
particularly with modern hydraulic clutches, the TO bearing doesn't release
contact with the pressure plate when your foot is off the pedal. so when it
starts to get noisy you can still hear it, even though it's not loaded. in
fact, i had a Saab TO bearing that was noisier unloaded and got quiet when i
stepped on the pedal and loaded it. go figure...
