Sorry, I'm catching up a bit on digests.

IIRC, the chain of events was supposed to have been this.  The car builds up 
sludge and such internally.  This prevents the seals from contact with the oil, 
so they shrink and dry out.  Then, switching to synthetic with detergents in it 
cleans out the sludge and junk.  This leaves the seals unable to seal, causing 
leaks.  This is the theory that I believe.  IMO, I don't think seals are eaten 
by synthetic.

As impractical as some may find it, I prefer to switch to synthetic, and fix 
the leaks (if any) as they occur.
