It creaks when I don't use the seat belt as well, and touching the seat
back makes it creak. I suspect Phil Payne's idea about a cracked weld was
spot-on.
I'll summon up courage to take the seatback apart and get back to you on
what I find.

My remedy has been occasional application of

The chrome plating is like new. I do suspect the passenger side front
seatbelt mechanism of the occasional rattle, though. I'll disassemble that,
too.
I wish Audi'd made their interiors a little easier to take apart. Even
after doing it a couple of times, taking a front door panel off still takes
me the best part of 30 minutes.
