Matt-

You might check the CV joints.  Look for a torn boot.  It will let
the grease leak out and moisture/dirt in.  I suspect that it's also
possible for a CV joint to go bad with the boot intact.  

I've never experienced what you described, but I have replaced both
front CV joint boots.  Good luck.
