It changes in frequency with speed, but is not affected by brakes, gear or clutch.  It is not a problem while accelerating or cruising, just when taking off the gas.  I looked quickly underneath, but did not see anything obviously amiss.

sounds like wheel bearing.  check 'em for play I guess...
