RE: more A/C questions
If the local Auto-parts store doesn't have an R-12 recharging kit, then you
may want to track down a Snap-On dealer, or the like, and obtain either a
kit or ideally a recharging kit with gauges and hoses.
Regarding a tracer-leak detector dye, I managed to find a product that is
intended to be affix onto the low-side (i.e., between compressor and
evaporator) service valve, wherein the dye is either manually forced into
the A/C system by turning a hexed end with a 5/8 inch wrench, which moves a
piston therein, or by forcing the dye into the system while charging with
R-12 (the hexed end also included a threaded service valve so as to act as
an intermediate coupling between the service valve and the charging hose
end). This device is substantially tubular and about 7 inches long having a
1-1/2 inch diameter. The problem I have with this device, is that it is too
long such that the device will not fit between the low-side service valve
(on the compressor of a 91 CQ) and a front frame support. I have a general
idea where my leak is (an area where the low-side line, between the
evaporator and the accumulator, couples to the accumulator) using a freon
sniffer, although using a dye will indicate the actual leak.
I'll end up using a soapy-water solution and look for bubbles. In the
meantime, I'll e-mail you with product information about the tracer-dye.
BTW, this tracer dye is specifically for R-12 and R-22 systems.
Good luck,
Bob
