944 v 20vt
Sean and I just had this discussion last weekend at a private track event.
Yes the 20vt will bolt into the 944t, the 944 use the same 016 derived trans,
only with the rear driveshaft. The 944 transmission is a common hotrod
trans, and the LT1 5k of Bob Dupree uses the LT1 adapter from the 944 on his
016 transmission.
The issue is really, why would you want to take a all aluminum, balance
shaft, larger displacement, smooth 4 cylinder, and swap it for a raucus small
displacement I5? I'm with Frank Amoroso on this one, it makes little sense
to me. Swapping one expensive motor for another expensive motor, that both
develop about the same max HP/$, seems more of an exercise in pining after
the competition, than doing some real homework. A quick look at some of the
engine swap pages on the net, would show that a v8 into the 944 chassis to be
a better investment for the 951. Short of that, Powerhaus can certainly
entertain your mind and wallet with some 400hp (dynoed) 951 cars. Most of
the crew over there own them.
Is it possible? Yup, you can do it. Does it make sense? Well given the
work involved to get basically the same output ony heavier, doesn't make
sense. If you are going to tear out the motor and harness, get an all
aluminum LT1, and get torque AND hp, at a lower bang for dollar investment.
