RE: Clutch slave/master
My 86 Coupe had the same problem, except it was more gradual, and if you
pumped the pedal, the clutch would eventually work. In my case the master
cylinder was bad, and they are expensive. In your case, since the leaks
are near the tranny, I would suspect the slave cylinder.
The suggested fix by your mechanic soulds like he doesn't know how to
remove the slave without removing the tranny. I had the same problem , and
like a dumbass I removed the tranny to remove the slave cylinder. However
there is a roll pin that can be driven out, and then the slave just slides
out. Rebuild kits were available for the slave 2 years ago, the kit was
only about 20 bucks. If you can do the CV shaft by yourself, they you
should be able the tackle the slave cylinder. Warning though, the CV
shafts are a lot harder to do than one on say a late 80's Japanese or
American car. (Takes me an average 20 mins a side to do a Nissan Sentra or
Chrysler K car, took a day to do the Audi.) Easier than an 89 Ford Escort
GT (American), though.
