1990 80Q woes
howdy. i'm brand spanking new to this list, so i guess i'd better
introduce myself. i'm joe. i am a former vw rabbit racer who sold his
hot hatch for enough $$ to move up to a long-coveted quattro. i got a
1990 80 Q with which i was very happy until some *&^$##@! in a sport
futility vehicle ran me off the road in a snowstorm and drove away
leaving me to finance and fix the problem. here's the nitty gritty:
right front wheel slammed flat against a high curb. i haven't had a
chance to spend too much time underneath, but the control arm is bent,
and the tie rod popped off. strut is dead.
the CV looks fine, and the strut tower didn't develop any paint
irregularities, leading me to believe that the car is still straight.
symptoms:
i can't keep the car straight while driving it unless i move the wheel
furiously in an alternating pattern even more ridiculous than a dukes of
hazzard inside the car driving shot.
questions/pleas:
1. i know that there are two types of control arms for the 80's, a
stamped steel and a cast iron. which one is mine?
2. i'm going to have to buy a new control arm. any advice? i tried
blaufergnugen, but they didn't have a cast iron one, which may be the one
i need. where would i find one?
3. bushings. i should go with the stock ones, right? i do plan on
putting eibach springs and boge turbogas struts in when i fix the
steering woes. the stock ones will handle the added tightness,
right? also, i have heard that the bushings are near impossible
to put in w/out a press. i have a vice. will this do? i also have a
narrow hallway and a big jack that i have used as a press before.
4.*** will somebody please tell me that the symptoms that i have listed do
not conform with the notorious rack replacement syndrome that i have
heard about?!***
5. does anybody have any of these parts? are there any, more ubiquitous
models that have parts interchangeable with my 80Q?
6. does anybody have a BBS 4-bolt wheel? you know, the one that came
stock with my 80Q? all of the wheels are perfect, except this one which
met the full force of the curb. i'm kind of anal about appearances.
thank you all very much for bearing with my story and questions. please
send replies both to me jab86@cornell.edu for easy access (very slow
connection, so q-list digest takes a while to get through) and to the
list for posterity and whatnot. thanks again.
