no Audi content- VW 16v H20 pump HELP?!

As above-
"Houston, we have a problem." Patient is a 91 GTI, 2.0 16V.
Right now we have overheating, which is perplexing
considering there are no visible leaks and the fan is
working fine. I am just unfamiliar enough with these to not
be able to see (in darkness) just how the water pump drive
is set up. Is this off the timing belt, or is it outboard?
Anyone been inside one of these things recently? (It's stuck
for the night at my house...)
BTW, the fuse for the type 44 fan is working swimmingly.
Details to follow once Blaufergnugen's much-cheaper-than the
dealer's $412 quote fan arrives... thanks for all the quick
responses everyone.
