RE: Auto Fire Extinguishers

One time on an interstate trip when I was about 15, we were the first to
pull up on a woman what appeared to be a smoking hood. As we got closer,
we could see flames licking out from under the hood. My grandfather picked
up a fair size car fire extinguisher, and emptied it under the hood, The
fire laughed at the puny effort. By this time it seemed 100 truckers
appeared out of nowhere, and they all ran up with full size fire
extinguishers (size of scuba tank) and it took about 20 of those to put out
what seemed to be a mild fire. All this took less than 2 minutes I would
guess, as there was a fair amount of traffic on the highway.

The moral here, is don't lull yourself with a false sense of security with
a small car extinguisher, this will only work in the first few seconds of
the fire, if it is flaming for long enough for you to pull over, then it is
likely is already to far advanced for one of the smaller units to work
(assuming engine fire.)
