manual steering rack in a 4kq/coupe/urq?

Hi,

Anyone have experience with driving a 4kq, coupe, or urq that has/had a
manual steering rack?  I've been told that the VW fox (USA) uses a manual
steering rack that will fit the urq/coupe/4kq.  I've also seen those racks
in the wrecking yards and they look to be dimensionally the same as the
power steering rack in the small Audis.

The real question is: how is steering feel and performance with a manual rack?

Surely this was an option for at least the European/Canadian/other than USA
markets?
