CV PROBLEM 86 4000CS QUATTRO

Hi all!

I'm new to this list and have been reading with great enjoyment over the

last couple of weeks. I have a 1986 4000 CS Quattro that I love, with
150,000 miles.

I knew that I had a ripped outer front passenger side CV boot that my
mechanic told me re: when I was having my fuel pump replaced. It was
one of those things I was going to deal with ASAP as life allowed...

Anyway, I drove on a gravel road today and when I hit the paved freeway
I noticed a squirreleyness (is that a word?) in my front end and the
position of my steering wheel changed (further to the left, but no
pulling) as I was driving straight forward.

I got under the car and the ripped CV boot is throwing grease. I'm not
driving it now and if anyone out there can give me some input I'd really

appreciate it! Do I simply need a new boot or is the thing trashed...
should I buy something new or rebuilt or chance a part from a local
wrecker?

Thank you in advance!
