RE: oil filter

Got myself caught on this one!

There is another post teaching me the error of my ways. Basically I thought
that the OEM filters were made by Bosch. This turns out to be untrue, I even
checked the car at 1:30am to find out I was mistaken.

The real point is that the OEM Audi filters are the very least one should
use in terms of quality. The turbo applications also have a check valve to
keep the oil pressure up on the turbo bearing so that they don't go metal to
metal on start-up. If a filter can be found that is better than the OEM
Audi - feel free to use it. Huw has a link on his site to a filter
comparison test. However unless you are ABSOLUTELY certain, don't risk
using anything else. Several Audi mechanics, unrelated and unknown to
eachother, have firmly endorsed using the OEM filter over any other.

I keep thinking in some ways that, with the German engineers building
Autobahn stormers, they have specified critical components to be
bullet-proof. A failed WOT switch only reduces power and driveability, door
handles... once your in... However, a failed oil filter will kill an engine.

If it's a critical component, ie; failure will result in mechanical damage -
think three times before changing to another part source or brand.

I actually use the Mobil high efficiency filter.. It is made by the same
company who makes the Bosch filter but it has a finer filter element and a
higher flow rate..

If you have a turbo there is only one filter to use - OEM Bosch.

If you care about your car there is only one filter to use - OEM Bosch.

If you want to rebuild your engine and need an excuse - don't use the OEM
Bosch.

NO. The Fram filters are CRAP. The ones I've seen don't have the
retention valve, and are flimsy compared to a quality filter. The ONE
time I put a Fram filter in the '84 5KS the engine sounded like all the
lifters needed changing. As for "working for your application", so
would a Hawaian Punch can and a roll of toilet paper if fitted properly.
