RE: Heating Core for a 87' 5kcstqw !!!!!!!!
The heater core is mounted in the airbox, which is removed from under the
hood. It is a lot easier job on the type 44 than on the Coupe or 4000 IME.
There are only a few screws, ducts and cables that need to be disconnected
inside the car ... all the rest is done under the hood.
The biggest difficulty for me was getting all of the air diverter flaps
lined up to allow the box to be reassembled after replacing the heater core.
If you don't know when the HVAC blower motor was replaced, you really should
consider replacing it when you do the heater core.
I don't see any reason you can't have the core bypassed indefinitely ...
since the way the system works has coolant running through the heater core
at almost all the time you will probably find the interior cooler in "ECON"
mode during the summer.
I believe that my BiL said that the one he had was around US$40 ...
