re: V8 Running Normal Running Temps
Something to look at (before checking all of the gauges) is whether the
electric cooling fan is running independently of the A/C. I say this
because the cooling fan in the V8 has four different speeds. Thus, four
different relays, fuses etc...etc..etc... However, the fan automatically
comes on with the AC (albeit only at the first/slowest speed). Basically,
you'll know if the fan is working -turn on the AC and see if she spins.
After the engine gets hot, turn off the AC, if the fan goes off you'll know
it's most likely a sensor, or something causing the fan to not get juice.
My V8 had a problem with the cooling sensor, which was dead. Basically at
highway speeds the car ran at just under 100c, but in some traffic, after a
highway drive, it got dangerously hot. I ordered the sensor, (and had the
dealer install it) for a little under $200.
Some food for thought though................I would find during this period
that if I shut the engine off for a few minutes the temp at startup would be
insanely high 120c +. I figured that like most other Audi's, the cooling fan
would stay on after you turn the car off. In my '86 4000s the cooling fan
would stay on for minutes after I shut it down......NOT the case on the V8,
(or at least not in the '90 V8). I figured that this was a problem on my
car, but when I asked the tech at the dealer he told me that the cooling fans
don't stay on after shut off.......Could this be true? It just seems a
little silly to me that with all of the other stuff built into the V8,
keeping the fan on for a few minutes after a long run would be beneficial.
Is this something unique to the earlier years, or do they all do this?
