Mirror problem probably solved....

Many thanks to Huw, Steve, and Jason for their quick responses. I had a
feeling that replacement would be a good idea, so after I sent my last
message, I went to Crazy Ray's Recyclers and found a perfectly intact pair of
black exterior power mirrors from an '83 4000S for $12.50 apiece! I have to
repair one of the wiring bundles (pinched where it passes through the door,)
but no big deal. My mirrors are currently pink due to oxidation that WILL
NOT COME OFF, and I think black would look better anyway, matching the window
trim and the body side mouldings. While I have the door panels off, I'll
take this opportunity to grease the window lift tracks and lube as many
moving parts as possible. I have learned the phrase "while you're in there,
why don't you......." quite well. I will let the list know when I have found
what caused the problem with the old mirrors so that it might save someone
else some time.

Once again in your debt,
