    On the later rear calipers, you can pop up this lever about 1/2 inch by
prying under it with a screwdriver. This lets you clean the rust off the
shaft and free up the lever. Apply some good waterproof lube to the shaft
and pop it back down. It should return to the stop on it's own without the
aid of the return spring (which must be removed to allow the lever to pop
up). The rear calipers on your car may be the same design - it's worth a
try.
    Applying the brakes will not force the lever against the stop.
