My thoughts on spacers are well known by now so I'll skip this part...

On my car, it's not the lip that that's the problem but the part of the
steering arm that's *underneath* the lip. Although I haven't run the numbers
yet myself, there are those who suggest that removing the steering arm and
repositioning it on the strut is beneficial to both tire clearance and
steering geometry.
