For those of us across the pond who don't speak English, what is a PC Plod 
and a lidar unit? I'm guessing from context it's a Policeman with a speed 
recording device?

PS Luck had nothing to do with it. You were exhibiting prudent, mature, and 
_safe_ driving. (IMHO of course) Knowing _when_ to stop is as important as 
being _able_ to stop.
