RE: Running the yellow nonsense
About the ticket - there are states in which it is illegal to enter the intersection
under a yellow, unless you clear it before the light turns red. Period, end of
traffic law. I received a ticket for this in Oregon in the early 1970's, and I the
only basis on which I could argue (successfully, as it turned out) was that the
car behind me was so close that I was sure there would be a collision if I
braked hard enough to stop for the light. I wasn't about to argue that the law
was nuts. I personally think it makes perfect sense. There is really no need
to "stretch" lights unless you're en route to the hospital with someone bleeding
in the seat beside you (been in that situation too, as the bleed-ee).
Bottom line: it is OUR job to know the traffic laws in the state in which we are
driving. In some states, for example, there is NO free right turn at a light after
stopping.
This reminds me of an old saying: "If you play, you gotta pay."
