My 87 4000 cs It Dead

AudiFans,

I got a call from the wife and she says the car won't start!! and
I can't get the kids to school!! we get this fixed with the help of
friends.  So maybe I could get a little help from fellow audi fan's.

This is a non turbo model, manual trans sedan.

The last thing I replaced was the starter, so that was the first thing
I looked at (still under warranty) after removing the starter. Some of
the trouble was quite obvious the nose of the starter was broken off??.
I've had this starter installed for about 1 year and a half with no
worries.  I'm feeling that I will fix the trouble just by replacing
the starter. The starter was not installed lose.  So I get the
replacement starter and replace it.  As my fears are true the car
doesn't start it sounds that the engine is spinning freely and making
a whining elec. motor noise and clanking as the starter attempts to start,
even though at this point I really don't want it to start sound the way
it does. The V-Belts are turning the wife says and the timing belt
is OK also.

The wife say's that the was just getting ready to run then she heard
cluck then all stopped, no back fire.

Anyone got any Ideas I know it hard to describe all the symptoms but
maybe some body can help a little
