My primary use of a car cover is to block out the sun and fallouts.
I don't use the car cover to shield out rain. In fact, I don't
use the car cover at all in wet weather. It would be a real mess to
have to put a wet car cover in the trunk...
I use Covercraft cotton covers on all my cars. These are custom
made for each model and fit exacly right, including pockets for the
side mirrors, and comes with a cable and lock for security. The
inside is lined with flannel and is very soft and gentle on the
paint. It is also breathable so that the occasional times when I
have to park outdoors overnight, the morning dew would evaporate
completely and quickly. It is also a good idea to use Scotchgard on
the outside of the cover to make it water resistant.
There are covers made from heavier duty material (like the Evolution 3
or Evolution 4 stuff) that are more weather resistant, but the thickness
of the material means that they don't fold into as small as clump
as the cotton covers do and takes up more space in your trunk. For those
who park outdoors and overnight often and for prolonged periods of
time, maybe these are more appropriate, but I don't like them.
