transmission question

Lets' try this one...

I have a spare tranny out of my 82 coupe (QF) to play with.  I *want* to
get the lower gearing effect of the later trannies, and I can't seem to
turn up one from an '84, which would have a cable clutch.  Got my hands
on one from an '86 (ABV), which should have the lower geared final drive
but has hydr. clutch.

Rumor as I understand it thus far is that the main difference in gearing
here is in the final drive.  Although I think that 4 and 5 are actually
slightly lower in the QF relative to 1,2, and 3.

Soooooo the *real* puzzler here this Sunday which has continued through
Tuesday so far (in the old days that would have meant really good drugs,
I'm not quite sure what it means now), is can you (and I mean "I") pull
the final drive out of the ABV and put it in the QF housing, adjusting
the lash while I'm at it, and get the effect I'm after (well, once it is
in my car, under the floorboards, not in the trunk, I mean)

well, any btdt's or corroborating hallucinations out there?
