Actually vaporizing might be a better word... but lexicography aside -  yes, 
there was certainly coolant leaking on the exhaust manifold.  Now for an 
update:  I drove the car home from work yesterday and back in today - no 
leak (yes, there is still coolant in the system) not much leaked out 
yesterday.  My temp light is now flashing, but the temp gauge is reading 
about normal.  The belts are tight.  I have heat in the car.  The rad fan 
doesn't spin (not related methinks).
