Iain,

Have you checked for clicking at the idle switch on the throttle linkage?
With the engine off, move the linkage as if to accelerate. Move it back and
forth to listen for the click. The switch should click audibly. If not, the
ECU doesn't know you're idling. (Have you touched the tiny idle adjusting
screw on the linkage? If this is mal adjusted, the idle switch might not be
activated.)
