Yes, some 944 models do use the 016 transmission.  As you state, the
transmission is mounted in back between the rear wheels, with a long
torque tube going forward to the front engine.  However the transmission
casing, gears and other stuff are indeed type 016 as found on the Audis.
No, the 944 is not AWD, but that doesn't prevent Porsche from adapting
the same tranny for that application.  Audi also has some 016-based
front-drive cars too, if I am not mistaken.  The difference is that
there is no center differential in the 2WD app and the associated rear
output.
