The Old Beetle and KG are similar... They both used the same carbureted
air-cooled engine and also both used a torsion bar suspension. The Super Beetle
(1973-) was a bit different though, as it used a MacPherson strut setup in the
front and also had a larger bore/displacement than the original Beetle. There
are also other minor differences such as windows, taillights bumpers, etc. but I
digress ....
The new beetle is based on the same platform as an A4 Golf. Standard engine
is the 2.0L 4 cylinder. Optional engines are the 1.9L TDI, and 1.8T
(turbonium!). It uses a MacPherson strut setup in the front and an independent
strut and spring in the rear (trailing arms).
The TT on the other hand, is based on an Audi A3 (only in Europe). On a TT
quattro, the front suspension is a MacPherson strut and spring setup, but the
rear uses a multi-link setup. Totally different from the NB. I've briefly seen
it, but it's hard for me to describe without looking at it more closely ...
perhaps another lister can fill you in. There are two engine options for the TT;
one that puts out 180hp and another which puts out 225hp (I don't think the
latter is in the states yet). They are both 1.8t engines, but are significantly
modified versions of the one used in the NB (150hp).
Some parts were interchangeable on a Old Beetle and KG. It's probably fair
to say that Beetle = KG as far as engine and suspension goes (not the super
beetle). I don't think this is the case with a New Beetle and TT. While they
may have similarities, they are definitely two totally different animals. New
Beetle != TT.
