Original poster said "jack kept collapsing as I would give the lugs the
final twist to take the wheel off." In my opinion, jacks should be able to
withstand wheel removal without collapsing. Though, I've always loosened the
lugs before getting her in the air. Minimize time and force applied while on
jack, but I wouldn't say jack stands are necessary to, say, change a flat.
