What causes intermittent dash lights?

Hi listers,
My question is in the subject line. This is in regards to an '86 5kcstq.

The dash lights went out on me yesterday and they did it again today.
This time, I was able to fix the problem by opening and closing the
glovebox. What gives?

After that, my center dash lights for the seat heaters and diff locks
decide to do the disco thing for a bit, flickering for a while.

I better get on the people at alldirect.com to hurry up and get me my
Bentley.
