Compression test

I want to do a compression test on my 1991 90 20 valve
I've got a Sears Craftsman Compression gauge which I'm afraid I've
never used on this car.  It's the one with the rubber hose that screws
into the spark plug hole and has the air hose type connector that you
attach to the gauge piece.  How do you get it way down in that hole
past the cams lifters etc?  A tube with a spark plug tread on on and
and NPT on the other would be ideal, anyone know where I could buy one?

The other item.  I've always shorted the primary of the coil (the one
that goes to the center of the distributor) to ground while I'm doing
this.  Is this correct?
