Re: Hydraulic lifters to non hydraulic

No, but I have read copies of reports from VW owners who have rebuilt older
air-cooled flat 4 engines and have changed the solid lifters to hydraulic.
To get the most benefit from such a change it was necessary to substitute a
different cam shaft. However, the conversion worked without the hydraulic cam.

Extrapolationg in reverse from the above experience, I would expect your
described conversion to work, but with less efficiency unless you looked
into a different cam, perhaps one from a pre-hydraulic engine.

I considered such a conversion when I rebuilt my 76 type 4 engine, but
stayed with the solid lifters.
