Type 44 exhaust and idling tests
(HX, JY, KG, KP, KU (K-Jetronic)

 See page 18.
  • With ignition switched off connect up test appliance for ignition timing, engine speed (e.g., VAG 1367) and CO content (e.g., VAG 1363A).
On engines with CO measuring pipe VAG 1363 must must be connected up so that the hose fits tightly onto CO measuring pipe, to ensure no exhaust gas leaks.
Attaching rpm meter (e.g., Draper DMM5) to coil low tension side
  • Use auxiliary clip for connecting to terminal 1 on coil
  • Start engine and run at idling speed.
  • Check ignition timing
(not engines with code letters JY and KG with FEI)
With TDC sender:
The ignition timing point is shown directly on the tester.
With stroboscope:
  • Flash ignition timing point with stroboscope.
The mark must be in line with reference edge on clutch bell housing

  • If required, adjust ignition timing by rotating distributor
Checking and adjusting idling speed and CO content
(all engines)

Note:
The idling speed and idling stabilisation must be checked together. If idling speed deviates from set control current (mA) the idling stabilisation must be checked.
  • Using auxiliary measuring wire VAG 1594 connect hand multimeter VAG 1526 to idling stabilisation valve (N71) with auxiliary measuring wire and auxiliary cables from VAG 1594 to measure control current (mA).

Measuring control current:
  • Run engine at idling speed.
  • Read off control current on hand multimeter.
  • The specified reading should be corrected if required at the idling adjustment screw A
If specification is not attained check idling speed stabilisation (repair measure>
Plugging crankcase breather hoses on turbocharged vehiclesVehicles with turbocharger
  • For adjusting CO content pull off and plug both crankcase breather hoses.
Plugging crankcase breather hoses on non-turbocharged vehiclesVehicles without turbocharger
  • For adjusting the CO content pull off crankcase breather hose and route so that only fresh air can be drawn in.
  • Run engine at idling speed
  • Check CO content
Using long 3mm Allen key to adjust CO content
  • If CO content is outside the tolerance adjust CO with adjusting key P377 (a long 3mm Allen key) B at CO adjustment screw
To adjust, remove sealing cap from CO adjustment screw
  • Switch off ignition
  • Centre-pop CO adjustment screw cap
  • Using 2.5mm drill, drill a 3.5mm deep hole in cap
  • Remove swarf
  • Screw in 3.0mm diameter tapping screw
  • Pull cap out with pliers
 Note:
When adjusting CO do NOTpress down or lift up the adjustment screw with the adjusting key.
Do NOT depress throttle with adjusting key in position (danger of bending).
Immediately remove adjusting key after each adjustment and give a short burst of throttle.
  • Start engine and run at idling speed
  • Adjust CO content with adjusting key
Notes:
  • When adjusting the mean value should be aimed for
  • Always increase CO content from decreased to increased value
Clockwise increases CO content
Anti-clockwise decreases CO content

After adjusting CO content the idling speed stabilisation is to be checked, and if necessary corrected to specified value
After adjustment lock adjustment screw with new anti-tamper cap #026 133 777
  • After completing adjustment see notes on page 18
