17-270 Lubrication System - Sump

If metal fragments or filings are found in the engine oil when repairing the engine,it is imperative that the engine block's oilways, the filter bracket and oil cooler lines, and the oil cooler itself are thoroughly cleaned. The oil cooler requires special attention and should simply be replaced if possible.

  1. Oil filler cap - the engine should stall if this is removed when running
  2. Dipstick. The difference between Minimum and Maximum is one litre
  3. Oil filter - slacken with strap wrench, Draper T74/14, Daimler-Benz 103 589 02 09 00
  4. Oil pressure sender - 30Nm
    • Warning point 1.6 to 2.0 bar
    • Operating range 0 to 5 bar
    • Checking - 17-19
  5. Sump gaskets
    • Always renew
    • Check positioning carefully
    • Do not stick
  6. Oil seal - always renew
  7. Oil pickup pipe - will be full when removed
  8. 10Nm
  9. Tab washer - always renew
  10. Baffle
  11. 20Nm
  12. Sump
  13. 40Nm - replace crush washer
  14. Flywheel cover plate
  15. 25Nm - thin-walled socket required
