Iain;
The sensor on the back of the head is not for the temp gauge. The temp gauge
is fed from the Multi Function Temperature Sensor (MFTS for short) at the
front left side of the head.
I'm only getting a year or so out of the OEM thermostats. The typical mode
of failure is that they won't hold temperature at higher speeds on really
cold winter days (i.e. -30 and lower). I surmise they are not closing
completely. This could be your problem, particularly if the engine cools off
coasting down a long hill - the thermostat may be sticking open a bit.

Subject: [s-cars] Fluctuating Temp Guage
My Urs6 is developing a little oddness, back in Jnauary i changed the
thermostat ever since then she has run at bang on 90 degs on the gauge, am
now seeing it drop maybe 5 to 10 degs, i can't say it does this at any
particular moment i.e when speed increases, sometimes it will do it going
down a hill.
yesterday we drove 350 miles most of it motorway between 85 and 90 mph, it
was back to normal it did drop only twice on that journey and very quickly
came back to normal. any ideas??? i have yet to pull the codes but don't
think i will find anything.
Is the sensor right on the back of the head the temp gauge btw???
Thanks
Iain
