Black paint on mid-80's Audi's

So, what is the deal with the black paint (well, mine is classified as
"graphite") peeling and fading on Audi cars in the mid 1980's??

I have seen numerous cars (5K, 4K, and Coupes) that have the peeling &
fading paint problem, mine included.  When I first bought the car in
1991, the paint was fine.  Now, however, it looks really bad.  What made
me think about it was another '85 GT in the junkyard at PAP (with quattro
badges ALL OVER it, from the front grill to the windows, to the rings on
the doors and even rings on the trunk, like a 200[?]).  Did Audi just
use cheap paint on these cars?
