Eliot, I remember eading that the M3 for the US has the engine it does is because the 
Euro M3 engine was very complicated (read expensive) and there would not be amarket in 
the US for a $50k+ 3 series.  It would not be profitable to sell only a few "exotic" 
M3's when they could get the same marketing benefit out of a cheaper M3.

Also, I belive that the Euro M3 is avery high revving engine with not much torque down 
low and we all know that US drivers like low end torque which the US M3 has.
