re; noisy fuel pump

As someone mentioned, a rise in pump noise
generally means your pump is on its way out.

BUT WAIT.

I have nearly the same car; 91 90q20v.
My pump started wailing, then the occasional "hiccup",
which is a bad thing, in my experience.

However, my favorite audi magician suggested
put some dray-gas in your next tank.  I did.
I also ran carb cleaner through the next-next tank.

No more problem.  No more noise.  Hmmmm.
