Well Phil,

One of the pins is the Timing  reference pin, and the other is the RPM 
reference pin.......

The single pin on the back (engine) side of the flywheel is the crank position sensor pin. RPM is sensed via the flywheel teeth. The two pins on the front (clutch) side of the fywheel appear to do nothing at all, the two Phil refers to as Zundwinkel or 'timing light' pins.
