sport quattro & S2 (was RE: ur-quattro)

That's a _very_ good question.  The answer is that no one knows.

I've never yet met two Audi historians who can agree on the _exact_ figure.  
Audi built around 216 in one run, and about 6 out of parts a few years later.  
But a number of other companies have built "Sports" using genuine Audi parts.  
A mechanic I know who spent 5 years working on nothing else but Sports says 
that no one can possibly have any idea how many there are - more were built 
than the factory records, but we also know that a large number were destroyed 
in competition.
 
The company that built Ford's GT40 says it built 12 and knows where all 22 
are.  It's a bit that way with Sports - several "pseudo-Sports" (easily 
identifiable by the 'A' pillar) have been made by cutting ur-quattros to bits.
 
Safest number is "around 200".  Nice car to compete in - not so nice on a long 
drive.
